Théâtre de la Ville Blends 150-Years History and L-ISA Technology

1
Having showcased the legendary Sarah Bernhardt for nearly two decades and hosted the premiere of Sartre's first play, Théâtre de la Ville has established itself as one of the world’s most prestigious venues. With a rich history spanning 150 years, it has illuminated the stage with a diverse array of productions, earning acclaim for its presentations of modern dance, theatre, and world music. Following an extensive seven-year refurbishment aimed at modernizing the 19th-century building with cutting-edge innovations, Théâtre de la Ville has once again embraced advanced technology, now offering immersive L-ISA experiences to audiences through its newly implemented sound system.
For nearly a decade, Théâtre de la Ville sought the perfect audio system to fulfill its aspirations for immersive sound. As part of the comprehensive refurbishment, the venue undertook numerous immersive system demonstrations to ensure optimal audio capabilities. Given the historical architecture's weight restrictions and placement challenges, versatility was also essential to cater to its eclectic array of productions.

After careful consideration, Théâtre de la Ville determined that L-Acoustics L-ISA technology was the ideal solution, resulting in a 20.1 Scene System comprising five hangs of two SB15m subs over eight Kiva II speakers, along with a center-flown cluster of six KS21 subwoofers. To enhance the auditory experience, thirteen X8 speakers were strategically hung along the sides, balcony edges, and ceiling to deliver surround sound to the parterre, while an additional seventeen 5XT speakers were discreetly integrated into the walls to surround the under-balcony seating. Alexandre Tramontin noted, “This full surround configuration provides exceptional sound quality without compromising the aesthetic splendor of the space.”

Five LA7.16i amplified controllers were chosen for their low energy consumption and high channel count, reducing both rack space and cabling. The LA7.16i excels in delivering robust power when needed while consuming minimal energy otherwise, resulting in a 30% reduction in power usage compared to similar systems.

The success of this project can be attributed to the close collaboration between Théâtre de la Ville and its technology partner, who played a proactive role in achieving the venue’s ambitious audio goals. Additionally, comprehensive training was provided to the venue’s staff, enabling them to transition seamlessly from stereo to fully immersive surround sound.

Théâtre de la Ville has solidified its status as one of the globe's most innovative and influential spaces, skillfully blending historical charm with contemporary advancements to captivate audiences and performers for generations. Benoit Goupillon, Sound Manager at Théâtre de la Ville, expressed his satisfaction, stating, “We are extremely pleased with the support received during this project. The proposed solution was relevant and elegant, overcoming significant technical and artistic challenges while being mindful of our environmental concerns. After months of intensive use, we are proud to have this system, which represents a significant evolution in sound reinforcement quality, delivering both subtlety and efficiency.”
