Where Professional Lighting Decisions Are Made

1
The Stage & Lighting Designers Meetup, organized by VGD Project this week, brought together lighting professionals in Vilnius to address how complex visual and technical challenges are solved in real projects — across television, stage, and live environments.

Rather than focusing on theory alone, the discussion centered on practical decision-making: how lighting choices shape visual language on camera, how beam behavior affects scenography, and how designers balance creative intent with technical constraints.

Mantas Šatkus, Director of Photography at LAC, shared applied insights from television production, highlighting how precise control of light directly influences image quality, consistency, and storytelling under demanding broadcast conditions.

Andrejs Dubkovs, lighting and stage designer, explored how the evolution of beam technologies has expanded the designer’s toolkit — enabling more flexible, expressive, and technically reliable solutions for modern shows.

Live demonstrations of the latest fixtures from Ayrton served as a practical reference point, helping connect professional challenges with real tools used in today’s workflows.

Meetings like this are valuable not because they introduce new products, but because they help the professional community think more clearly, make better choices, and solve difficult tasks with confidence.

If technology is only a tool, how do we decide when — and how — to use it wisely?
